May 20, 1986: Special Operations Command South (SOCSOUTH) authorized by the Joint Chiefs of Staff.

August 4, 1986: SOCSOUTH activated in Quarry Heights, Panama, as asubordinate division under the USSOUTHCOM Operations Directorate (J3), with Charlie Company, 3rd Battalion of 7th Special Forces Group (Airborn) as a component of United States Army South (USARSO). SOCSOUTH's leaders reorganized the command as a separate headquarters and relocated to Albrook Air Force Station, Panama, under the Panama, under the Panama Canal Implemnetation Treaty, where they established offices in the basement of the Department of Defense (DoD) Schools building.

June 1999​: SOCSOUTH's headquarters staff moved to Roosevelt Roads, Puerto Rico.

April 2004: SOCSOUTH moved to its current location at Homestead Air Reserve Base in Florida to help support the closure of Roosevelt Roads. Initially, it operated in a temporary headquarters comprised of 32 modular office facilities. In 2014, they constructed a new building to accommodate over 400 military service members, civiilan employees, and contractor personnel.

SOCSOUTH's personnel have earned numerous honors, including:

  • An Expeditionary Streamer for Just Cause
  • Four Joint Meritorious Unit Awards (JMUA)
