Transportation and Personal Property

After you've been notified of your assignment, you should visit https://www.move.mil to arrange the movement of your personal items.

To make sure you have a smooth transition, we recommend you utilize all three of your authorized shipments:

  1. Non-Temp Storage (NTS):  It is important to understand that many homes in Germany are much smaller than those in the US, and therefore, you may want to carefully consider bringing large items (e.g. oversized furniture, gas powered lawn items, outdoor furniture or playsets, et al).  There is also, normally, very limited storage in rental homes, so it is highly recommended you speak with your sponsor about gauging what items to leave in NTS.
  2.
  3. Unaccompanied Baggage (UAB): Use UAB to ship items such as bed and bath linens, children’s favorite toys, seasonal clothing and items which are too cumbersome for normal suitcase travel, but would be hard to live without for upwards of 60-days.  It is best to ship these items no later than one week of your departure for Germany.
  4.
  5. Household Goods (HHG):  The items you and your family decided to bring are ultimately up to you, you can be sure that you will always regret something you decided to bring and cannot use, or worse, something you left behind and wish that you had not.  Your sponsor can provide a personal touch and your encouraged to visit our community page (LINK) where other inbound personnel, as well as past and present members, can provide feedback.  The community site allows provides information about other social media platforms, such as Facebook and Instagram.

If you're offered Government housing or find a location on the economy, you are eligible to receive temporary government furniture until such time that your UAB and/or HHG arrive.

Army Community Service (ACS) does offer basic kitchen ware, small appliances and baby/toddler items for up to 60-days.

Washers and Dryers are provided, whether in on-post or off-post housing, so it is highly recommended that you leave those items in NTS.

On-Post housing has both 110v and 220v outlets, so it is best to wait until you arrive and have received your housing assignment before purchasing or selling large appliances.  If you bring your 110v appliances, you can purchase voltage adapters which will allow you to use your items in off-post housing.
