Office of Communication

The U.S. Special Operations Command Office of Communication provides trusted advice and counsel to the USSOCOM commander and other senior leaders related to press engagements, communication strategies, internal and external communications and outreach programs. The office creates public and internal information products to inform various audiences about the mission and activities of the command. There is also a staff that handles media or other external requests for information about the command. Lastly, the office engages in community relations to foster continued positive relationships within the Tampa Bay area.

Command information, also referred to as internal communication programs, is meant to provide the commander a primary method of communicating mission essential information to members of the command. The news and information provided through these programs also aids with internal command cooperation and mission performance. Keeping members of the command aware, providing and encouraging participation in command and community programs, and delivering details on other matters helps to improve the quality of life, promotes morale and esprit de corps, and fosters career retention by keeping the USSOCOM family better informed. Although command information mainly targets USSOCOM members and their families, command information products may also be released via external communication methods

To facilitate interaction between U.S. Special Operations Command personnel and communities locally and regionally, and to promote the dedication, professionalism and patriotism of U.S. Special Operations Forces. The goal is to improve the local community’s understanding of USSOCOM, its mission, and the U.S. defense posture and capabilities by increasing public exposure to, and understanding of Special Operations Forces personnel, organizational structure, equipment, and programs.

A core public affairs mission is to provide timely, accurate and truthful information to local, national, and international publics. Commanders, with the assistance of public affairs, will take a proactive posture to build and maintain key relationships between their units and the media. SOF media engagements will maximize the ability to protect operator and family identities, classified information, and maintain the appropriate level of OPSEC while also allowing media coverage that supports the accomplishment of the command’s objectives and supports the command priorities. Commanders will prepare for potential media interest in all command programs, plans and actions.
