Course Information

Description: This course prepares Joint Special Operations University (JSOU) faculty members and other selected SOF instructors to develop and teach curriculum while creating active learning environments focused on higher levels of learning through the use of various teaching methodologies. The course is divided into five modules.

Module 1: (JSOU Fundamentals-3 Days) – Students will receive an introduction to JSOU with an overview of the faculty and staff processes and procedures necessary to function within the university.

Module 2: (Curriculum Development-6 Days) - Students will receive lessons relating to learning theory, the Instructional Systems Development (ISD) process, active learning, development of level-of-learning lessons, and student evaluation. Students will also be provided lessons on the design and development of student assessment products.

Module 3: (Developing as an Instructor-4 Days) - Students will receive lessons relating to a variety of teaching methodologies and presentation techniques.  Students will give a presentation utilizing one or more of the teaching methodologies learned in this module.

Module 4: (Distance Learning Methodologies-2 Days) – This module is designed for instructors and instructors of record (course director) who utilize the JSOU e-Campus learning management system to deliver content to students.  The module focuses on the planning, tools, and techniques that are essential to provide an engaging learning experience for students through the online environment.

Module 5: (Instructor of Record Responsibilities-1 Day) – This module is designed for individuals who will be assigned responsibility as the instructor of record (course director) of a course.  The student will be provided lessons on the pre-course responsibilities, course execution responsibilities, and post-course responsibilities.

Audience: Newly assigned/hired JSOU faculty members are the top priority. SOF personnel teaching in any service or joint education environment are the second priority. The FDC is a joint SOF academic instructor course.

Prerequisites: There are no prerequisites for this course.

Text and Material: There are no required texts or materials for this course.

Accreditation: JSOU is currently an accredited educational institution accredited through the Accrediting Council for Continuing Education & Training (ACCET) - a national accrediting agency recognized by the Department of Education.
