Wounded Warrior Housing Program Information
There are many home donation programs available to severely wounded service members and their families. Most of these programs have the same basic requirements:
The service member or veteran:
- Must not have a current mortgage
- Must have been wounded, ill, or injured on active duty in combat, in a combat zone, or in combat training
- Must submit to a criminal and financial background check
- Veterans must have been honorably discharged from the military
While these homes are typically mortgage-free, there may still be some costs to the service member associated with home ownership, such as insurance, taxes, and homeowners association fees. Many of these organizations also require the service member to enter into their organization's mentoring program, prior to the gifting of a home. These programs usually include financial planning, home ownership classes, and other requirements that integrate the service members and their families into the community.
Please note that active duty service members must get an ethics determination prior to accepting any gift from a non-Federal entity.
